Adderall and Other Stimulant Medications

Stimulants, including Adderall, are a standard, effective treatment for ADHD when used appropriately. I have had a small number of patients on stimulants for years. If they do not benefit, the Adderall is stopped.

Adderall is classified by the Drug Enforcement Administration as Schedule II. This means that Adderall need to be carefully supervised at all professional and administrative levels.

ADHD, Addiction, and Medical Complexity

ADHD frequently coexists with other medical and psychiatric conditions, including anxiety, mood disorders (such as bipolar), and substance use.

In patients on Suboxone, ADHD requires particularly careful evaluation. Symptoms of inattention and restlessness can overlap with other conditions. Treatment decisions must be made carefully.

The slow titration allows you to find an effective dose which is the minimum required for your benefit without excess. Over the years, as you change, I adjust your dose to maintain the benefits to you while minimizing the risk to you.

You often know that you have ADHD long before it is formally recognized. You experience how much daily effort is required to overcome your ADHD – even when others do not see it.

Your ADHD is real. You cannot concentrate. Or you are scattered. Or you are forgetful. You have difficulty getting a day’s work done. You may have lost jobs. As the years pass, you accumulate real losses.

Yes, ADHD is serious. Failure to have your ADHD diagnosed is serious. Most of my patients have lived with their ADHD untreated for years to decades. Once I begin them on treatment, their most common response is the ability to work and live more fully.

Do Adults have ADHD? Do Women have ADHD?

In earlier medical thinking, ADHD was viewed as a childhood condition, most often diagnosed in boys. This understanding has changed. We now understand.

  1. ADHD beginning in childhood usually persists into adulthood.
  2. ADHD is commonly diagnosed for the first time in adulthood.
  3. ADHD in women is different from ADHD in men.
  4. ADHD in girls is usually not recognized since girls are more likely to be absent-minded instead of hyperactive.
