ADHD and Adderall Care in Nashville | Suboxone+Primary Care™ | Dr. Conway
Adderall and Other Stimulant Medications
Stimulants, including Adderall, are a standard, effective treatment for ADHD when used appropriately. I have had a small number of patients on stimulants for years. If they do not benefit, the Adderall is stopped.
Adderall is classified by the Drug Enforcement Administration as Schedule II. This means that Adderall need to be carefully supervised at all professional and administrative levels.
Adderall is commonly misused by college students to cram for examinations rather than study effectively. The Wall Street Journal summarizes recent cases of national concern.
In my practice, Adderall is never prescribed casually. It is only used as part of a long-term comprehensive plan.
ADHD, Addiction, and Medical Complexity
ADHD frequently coexists with other medical and psychiatric conditions, including anxiety, mood disorders (such as bipolar), and substance use.
In patients on Suboxone, ADHD requires particularly careful evaluation. Symptoms of inattention and restlessness can overlap with other conditions. Treatment decisions must be made carefully.
In my practice in Nashville, ADHD is assessed in full context of your health – not in isolation. Treatment is staged, openly discussed, and we choose together after you receive full informed consent.
A Practice Built on Time and Attention
ADHD is not revealed in a single moment. ADHD is revealed over time, in multiple continuing chapters of your life in which failures of attention or hyperactivity hurt you. In your medical history, you will reveal to me the impairments you have suffered from ADHD over the years.
My treatment begins carefully, takes time to reach full effectiveness, and is never rushed. With prescription, I begin with the lowest dose to ensure you are not hurt by the medication. As the dose is gradually increased by me, we reach a level which benefits you without hurting you.
The slow titration allows you to find an effective dose which is the minimum required for your benefit without excess. Over the years, as you change, I adjust your dose to maintain the benefits to you while minimizing the risk to you.
Our Approach to ADHD
ADHD is common in my patients on Suboxone in Nashville. The diagnosis of ADHD, and the functional impairments from ADHD are first diagnosed by me.
We identify any related or overlapping conditions. A staged treatment program is then discussed carefully, allowing you time to consider options and ask questions.
Medication shortages, including Adderall shortages, have occurred nationally. I am available to consult if your home pharmacy experiences shortages.
In my small physician led practice, with devoted patients, many patients have experienced meaningful improvement in their daily life through this approach without unnecessary risk or toxicity.
How Often Do You Have to See Us?
Our practice in Nashville uses the same Tennessee rules for Adderall that we use for Suboxone, with compliance with the strictest Tennessee standards. You will see us monthly, either in the office or telemedicine. Current Tennessee rules require four visits in the office every year.
I will be your doctor.
I will know you, remember you, and stay with you over time.
We will move at a pace that protects you, and adjust as your life changes.
